Emmy’s Not Just About Traditional TV

This year’s Emmy nominations are out and if you haven’t tried Netflix yet, you should. Netflix is setting new standards for original programming. House of Cards, Arrested Development andmedia buyer OH Hemlock Grove can only be found on Netflix, but they were able to capture 14 nominations that stunned many.

Netflix is redefining TV.  Television is now on broadcast, on cable and on demand on the Internet.  Marketers are learning that traditional viewing is quickly being replaced by on demand viewing.  People want to watch what they want, when they want.  There is no more appointment viewing established long ago by NBC during their ratings hay day.

The 2012–13 television season ended recently and was one of the worst years ever in the history of network TV. With very few new breakout hits, the major networks lost approximately 10 percent of their adults-under-50 audience this season. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and the CW lost ground among adults under 50 with their returning series.  

The networks can’t blame their decline on DVRs.  Nielsen numbers now include viewers who time-shift shows within a week of their initial broadcast.
