Since October 2010, Instagram has been one of the fastest growing and most popular social networking sites, hitting 100 million users faster than Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Now social media marketers have a new feature to enhance their marketing efforts.
Instagram is an online photo sharing service that allows users to personalize each photo through filters and affects turning ordinary photos into something extraordinary. Then, users share the photos on their Instagram page as well as other social media outlets. When scrolling through your Instagram feed, you can view your follower’s photos and then chose to like or comment on them. Photos that get a lot of likes make it to the popular page for all Instagram users to see.
Instagram was created by Kevein Systrom and Mike Krieger in October 2010 and then bought by Facebook for approximately 1 billion in cash and stock in April 2012.
Since its inception, Instagram has added updates to expand on their original idea. First in January 2011, Instagram added hashtags so users could discover categorized photographs and connect with other users. Then in May 2013, Instagram announced a new feature called Photos of You, which allows users to tag any Instagram account to their photos. This feature includes a Photos on You section in your profile which allows users to view the photos that they have been tagged in.
Now Instagram has taken it a step further, last week the latest feature was announced at press conference in California, “Videos on Instagram”. This new feature is a spin off of Twitter’s Vine, which allows users to share short video clips with friends. However, Instagrams version has some keen features that have already shown early adoption. Within the first 24 hours of the release, there were over 5 million videos posted on the site.
To go along with the new feature, Instagram added 13 new filters that are built specifically for sharing video clips. They also allow you to choose a cover photo, so when the video isn’t playing there is the best image of the video displayed on the screen. Instagram decided to allow videos to be 15 seconds in length, which is coincidentally the length of some short advertisements popular with TV advertisers. Could this be the future of advertising on Facebook and Instagram?
Using the new feature is just like when you go to take a photo on Instagram but now you will see a movie camera icon. To enter video mode, just tap the icon and start recording. This new feature offers opportunities for marketers to enhance their postings and engage their audience more fully.
