NBA Has a Unique Social Media Strategy

As Facebook and Twitter increase their fan base, businesses have begun to incorporate the platforms into their marketing strategy.  Not surprising, social media has become an important marketing tool for the NBA.  On June 20 at 9 pm, the first NBA Social Media Awards show will debut. The awards ceremony will recognize players, teams and fans who excelled at leveraging social media for engagement and entertainment this season.

The show will celebrate social media success on platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, according to NBA representatives. Among the honorees will be the player who best uses social media across all platforms, the team or players who created the season's most viral blooper play and the team whose social following saw the biggest boost this year.

In May, the NBA became the first sports league in the world to reach 5 million Twitter followers. Fans used Twitter to vote for this year’s Slam Dunk Contest winner, and in March the league began selling t-shirts with players' Twitter handles on them. The NBA also launched Pinterest and Tumblr pages.

The show will be hosted by NBA Champ Rick Fox and he will be joined by Shaquille O'Neal and Lang Whitaker.  Fan voting starts today, June 6.
